Chitra Kaam is a unique sculptural mud work tradition practiced by the women of certain communities in the Kutch region of Gujarat, India. Local clay is combined with fibrous horse or camel manure, formed into a paste and fermented overnight. This is then rolled into long cylindrical shapes which are moulded by hand onto the walls into geometric and organic shapes. These designs are then inlaid with tiny mirrors and painted over with vibrant white caly. These designs are used to decorate the interior of their homes - locally known as Bhungas. To learn all about how to harvest natural clays, how to make natural clay paints, how to prepare them for sculptural work and how to create symmetrical designs using your body as your guide, come and join us in Kutch for this 4 day hands on workshop learning directly from Master artisan Bharmabehn.
